Figures recently released in August show that unemployment for those aged 18-24 has shot up by 10% in the space of one month, and doubled from the end of July 2008.
At the end of July 09 the number of unemployed young adults in the Watford constituency area had risen to 555 from 505 at the end of June. In July 2008 the number was 230, showing a near doubling of the figure in just twelve months.
The statistics for those aged over 25 has remained broadly the same since June 09.
Sal Brinton, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Watford said "This is a truly shocking figure for the Watford area. The reality for young adults is that they are now twice as likely to be unemployed than a year ago, and the number may well increase significantly as those who hoped to go to University discover that they are unable to get a place.
"I have been talking to some young adults who are extremely worried that they are finding it impossible to get an interview, let alone a job. We need to ensure that they have access to free training and education whilst they are seeking work."
