Sal Brinton has commented on the latest news that the Government has been told it may not appeal against a court judgement that says they should compensate the policy holders of Equitable Life, who lost most of their savings over 9 years ago when Equitable Life went bust. Sal said "It is absolutely astonishing that the Labour government has continually refused to accept its role in the failure of Equitable Life, leaving an estimated million policyholders left with nothing, despite government maladministration, confirmed by the Pensions Ombudsman. Watford-based Equitable Life policy holders have been in touch with me, asking for support, which I am happy to give them, as I believe they have been treated very badly by a Government who did not regulate Equitable Life appropriately.
"Last week, the government were refused permission to appeal against a victory of the Equitable Life victims. Their victory means that, at last, hundreds of thousands of policy holders might at last get some compensation. The Liberal Democrats take this matter so seriously that this week we have hosted a debate in Parliament, to push for the justice that these people deserve.
But for some it is too late. An old family friend of ours who lost his most of his pension in 2000 died this summer. There will be no compensation for him, nor for the estimated 15 pensioners a day dying, still waiting for justice."
