Following an announcement by the Watford Conservatives that they are asking people to provide "Treats for Troops" to servicemen and women in Afghanistan, Sal Brinton, Liberal Democrat prospective MP for Watford asks that rather than sending parcels to the troops they support the recognised charities who have agreements with the British Forces Post Office (BFPO).
Sal said: 'In the run up to Christmas we wanted to do something special for our troops serving in Afghanistan. Having done some research, we spoke to the MOD about sending troops presents. The MOD's advice on this was they do not want unsolicited post, mainly because at this time of year friends and families of serving troops will be trying to get their own gifts through a very limited postal service, which can be delayed if large quantities of post are sent by members of the public. It would be very sad if soldiers were denied Christmas parcels from their families because strangers had deluged the system.
'We urge anybody wanting to do something special for the troops should follow the advice on the MODs website, support the charities already set up and let the post get through from friends and families. Charities such as the Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes and Combat Stress and many others would welcome our support to help current and past servicemen and women.'
